Diamonds polishing for final show

-- The De Soto High School Diamonds are working hard on this year's spring show.
The dance team took over the Lexington Trails Middle School auditorium this week as it began practice for its third annual show, which will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at the middle school. The show is intended as a fund-raiser and special community event for the team. Tickets for the event are $5 and desserts cost $1.
A week before practice, team coach Amanda Wilkins told the girls they wouldn't be able to get some of the music they planned to use for a dance. Instead, the girls decided to choose a new piece, which meant they had to learn an entire new dance routine by Saturday.
"They've learned a whole dance in less time than that," Wilkins said. "Once we had to learn it in three days. They'll work very hard on this."
She said the dancers typically spend several hours after school, sometimes even mornings before school, to get ready for the show. The team of 16 De Soto High School students has a few graduating seniors who will be dancing as Diamonds for their final time.
Senior Brianna Cooper said she enjoyed her years on the dance team. On Saturday, her father will join other Diamonds dads to perform "She's a Lady" by Tom Jones.
Senior Morgan Kopecky spent the last three years on the dance team.
"I've been dancing for a long time, and it's fun to do with my friends," she said.
Between dance numbers, students will perform forensics routines and sing. The dance team will have a variety of dances -- even clogging.
